Overview

The ftl config command configures advanced FTL settings. Currently supports AWS integration for production-grade features including S3 snapshots, CloudWatch logging, Secrets Manager, and Bedrock Guardrails.

Usage

Options

boolean
default:"false"
Configure FTL to use AWS for snapshots, tracing, secrets, and guardrails

AWS Configuration

Prerequisites

Before running ftl config --aws:
  1. Install AWS dependencies: pip install -e ".[aws]"
  2. Configure AWS credentials (via aws configure or environment variables)
  3. Run ftl init in your project to create .ftlconfig
  4. Ensure you have permissions to create S3 buckets, CloudWatch log groups, and Bedrock guardrails

What It Does

When you run ftl config --aws, FTL:
  1. Detects AWS Account - Gets your account ID and region
  2. Creates S3 Bucket - Creates ftl-{account_id}-{region} for snapshot storage
  3. Creates CloudWatch Log Group - Creates /ftl/{project_name} for session logs
  4. Creates Bedrock Guardrail - Creates ftl-{project_name} to block sensitive data
  5. Prompts for Secrets Manager - Optionally configure a prefix for secret storage
  6. Updates .ftlconfig - Writes AWS resource IDs to your project config

Idempotent Operations

All AWS resource creation is idempotent. If resources already exist:

AWS Resources Created

S3 Bucket

  • Name: ftl-{account_id}-{region}
  • Purpose: Stores project snapshots
  • Replaces: Local ~/.ftl/snapshots directory

CloudWatch Log Group

  • Name: /ftl/{project_name}
  • Purpose: Centralized session audit logs
  • Replaces: Local ~/.ftl/sessions.log file

Bedrock Guardrail

  • Name: ftl-{project_name}
  • Purpose: Blocks sensitive data in AI interactions
  • Blocks: AWS access keys, API keys, passwords, emails, credit cards, etc.

Secrets Manager (Optional)

  • Prefix: Custom (e.g., my-app/)
  • Purpose: Secure credential storage for agents
  • Usage: Agents can read secrets at runtime without exposing them

Updated .ftlconfig

After AWS configuration, your .ftlconfig will include:

Benefits of AWS Integration

  • Team Collaboration: Share snapshots across team members via S3
  • Audit Trail: Centralized logging in CloudWatch for compliance
  • Security: Bedrock Guardrails prevent credential leaks
  • Secret Management: Secure, rotatable credentials via Secrets Manager

IAM Permissions Required

Your AWS credentials need these permissions:

Switching Back to Local Mode

To stop using AWS and revert to local storage, manually edit .ftlconfig and remove the AWS keys:

Troubleshooting

boto3 Not Installed

Solution: Install AWS dependencies.

No .ftlconfig Found

Solution: Run ftl init in your project directory.

Permission Denied

If you get AWS permission errors, ensure your IAM user or role has the required permissions listed above.
